  • Integra Cloud, based on an open and secure platform, will allow to optimize procedures, reduce costs and obtain improvements for both patients and health care entities and professionals.
  • The project, funded with 5 million euros by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, will conclude in June 2025.

València, January 24th 2024. The INCLIVA Health Research Institute has obtained 5.2 million in national funding to carry out a pilot project for the integration of real-time health information from the Clínico-Malvarrosa Health Department of the province of València. The Integra Cloud project will optimize care procedures and reduce health costs, obtaining improvements for both patients and the different entities and professionals involved throughout the entire care process.

INCLIVA is the only health research center in Spain beneficiary of these grants awarded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation to public research centers and foundations and public universities for the return obtained by participating in R&D+i projects within the public-private initiative cPPP Big Data related to cloud computing of Horizon 2020, the program of greatest scientific excellence in this field in the European Union. The funding received by INCLIVA is the result of its participation in European projects in Big Data such as BigMedilytics and BodyPass.

The Integra Cloud project, which will conclude at the end of June 2025, will be developed by the Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Platform of INCLIVA, which has Dr. Josep Redón as principal investigator, and will have the participation of the Computer Unit of INCLIVA, as well as the Computer Services, Internal Medicine and Pharmacy of the Hospital Clínico Universitario de València and the General Directorate of Public Health of the Conselleria de Sanidad.

Integra Cloud aims to transform the health care sector through a series of activities based on the availability and analysis of care and logistics processes in real time.

The project will create an open and secure platform for the integration of all health information that will allow access, capture, storage and decentralized exchange of real-time health data within the Clinical-Malvarrosa Health Department (350,000 inhabitants). The platform will enable the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics models that will empower managers and health professionals in decision making. In this way, it is intended to improve health outcomes and patient experience and reduce the cost of care.

The health sector currently represents 10% of the European Union’s (EU) GDP. It is estimated that the total EU health expenditure is 1.48 trillion euros, of which almost one trillion corresponds to hospitals and outpatient care providers. This figure is expected to increase by 30% by 2060, mainly due to the rapid aging of the population. All this leads to increasing cost pressure on public budgets and a growth in demand, which threatens the sustainability of European health systems and poses the need to optimize management models.

The project will generate a ‘health data lake’ (datalake) that will enable the secure exploitation of data, and will allow the connection with other national and international datalakes, becoming the precursor of new intelligent applications developed using AI techniques. The automation and visualization of global metrics, through the combination of information sources (primary, specialized and others) will help decision-making by public health authorities. Likewise, an interface will be developed for the future implementation of telemedicine.

“Integra Cloud will position Spain and the Valencian Community and, in particular, the Clínico-Malvarrosa Health Department and INCLIVA as a node of excellence in AI that will act as a catalyst within the health sector, both for the generation of knowledge and new digital capabilities, as well as new opportunities for industry”, highlights Dr. Josep Redón.

The platform will be validated in four use cases in the Clínico-Malvarrosa Health Department. The successful integration of the different components, layers and tools of the platform, will demonstrate that it is easy to configure and exploit for its future scalability at the level of the Valencian Community, as well as other regions at national and international level.

Integra Cloud has obtained funding from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation under Royal Decree 959/2022, of November 15, which regulates the direct grant of a subsidy to public research centers and foundations and Spanish public universities for the realization of innovative projects in the area of cloud computing of the UNICO R&D Cloud Program, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union- Next Generation EU.
